In practice, drums are among the loudest of instruments. While they are have the potential of being among the most expressive of instruments (given their dynamic range), the subtle nuances of drum playing can be easily drowned out. The SPL DrumXchanger is the latest SPL project to provide a solution for drums.
The DrumXchanger is a new plugin designed to provide transient processing for drums. The way it exactly works is as follows: it replaces drum sounds in multitrack sessions irrespective of their level. What this means is that despite existing audio levels, DrumXchanger can make drums sound right, complete with all nuances, being given the most appropriate levels. Users can either replace or enhance the original sound through processing or combining it with samples it is equipped with.
SPL reports that DrumXchanger is capable of working in real time and replaces sample phases accurately in the original signal. This plugin makes use of Transient Designer technology for drum hit recognition rather than sound creation. The result of this is that each drum hit, including ghost notes, is reproduced faithfully regardless of dynamic level.
Each of the samples produced by DrumXchanger can be mixed with the original drum sound. It also is equipped with a ducking function that only reduces the level of the original drum hit itself without affecting the ambience around it. DrumXchanger also has two fully operational Transient Designer processors along with high-pass and low-pass filters for the original, sampled, and output signals. As for the samples themselves, DrumXchanger's material have been rendered in 24-bit/96-kHz audio resolution (three drum kits with one snare, one bass drum and four toms) and can be pitch shifted as much as an octave down or up. Users may even make use of their own drum samples for further processing
SPL DrumXchanger will become available at a suggested retail price of 449.00 USD and will be in RTAS, VST, and AU formats. This new plugin will make its debut at Musikmesse in Frankfurt, Germany on March 24 to 27, 2010. The final version's release will be announced at the said trade show.
