Keith McMillen Instruments SoftStep: Treading Lightly in a Big Way
Posted on Monday, February 08 @ 23:00:00 CST by admin

Tools and Hardware Foot controllers are really very useful devices in taming a lot of rigs including both software- and hardware-based ones. They do, however, offer a bit of challenge during transport as they tend to be bulky. They also add in a significant amount of weight to your baggage. The Keith McMillen Instruments SoftStep is an alternative to bulky foot controllers in a package that weighs about just a pound.

Featured last Winter NAMM 2010, SoftStep boasts of being the most versatile foot controller in existence. It is a lightweight foot controller than can fit laptop cases, and has 10 assignable keys. The good part about those keys is that they are not simple on/off switches; they offer five degrees of freedom.

While it looks like it's not going to withstand the rigors of the road, SoftStep has an elastomeric and carbon composite construction that makes it lightweight and rugged. All of the keys have LED backlights to make it easy for musicians to see on stage. It also has a 20-LED, four-digit alphanumeric display that keeps users informed of the foot controller's status.

The 10 programmable keys of SoftStep have five degrees of freedom that can be preprogrammed to control effects, software, or multimedia via USB. Motions include left/right, up/down, pressure, and rotary. With such a variety of control options, it allows for a greater degree of expression. More than that, SoftStep even an expansion port for an expression pedal as well as MIDI I/O for added expansion. SoftStep also features a diamond shaped array of four navigation buttons that can serve to access presets or work as a volume pedal.

Keith McMillen Instruments SoftStep is bundled with the SoftStep Connectivity Software which enables users to configure SoftStep as well as allows users to make use of SoftStep to control presets, notes, continuous controllers, as well as transport commands. SoftStep even goes beyond control over effects as it can also permit hands-free control over DAWs. Pricing for the SoftStep is still TBA and will be available by the second quarter of 2010.
