While DAWs have been popularly known to exist in standalone formats installed within your computer, the technology that has been running over the internet has come such a long way. Nowadays, people can perform various musical processes from notation to even recording just by the use of a high-speed internet connection and one's imagination. Electronic music fans will be delighted to be able to have a chance to create their own music even without sophisticated equipment through the Hobnox AudioTool.
AudioTool is a browser-based DAW developed by Hobnox that is primarily geared towards the creation of electronic music. It is a modular system that is intuitive to use and offers a mixing console, two kinds of drum machines, a bass synthesizer, another synthesizer called the ToneMatrix, and a host of "external" effects modules. It also has transport functions for playing back a composition as well as up to five minutes of recording one session.
As with modular systems, setting up a session in AudioTool requires loading equipment from "The Shelf" (the hub that contains all the instruments and the playback equipment), and connecting each and every component in accordance to a user's needs, just as anyone would do in setting up a hardware recording or performance rig. To get users started, AudioTool offers three preset configurations: the ToneMatrix, Electro, and DrumNBass. More advanced users who want to create their own rigs can choose "Blank" so that they themselves can set up their own modules.
The transport controls in AudioTool take charge over playback as well as settings such as tempo, time signature, and the amount of shuffle. AudioTool's variety of synths are influenced by famous synthesizes and drum machines such as the TR-808 from Roland. The good part about AudioTool is that it is not intimidating for use at all as anyone that has just rudimentary knowledge of sequencing and production can get themselves creating tracks in no time. Instruments such as the ToneMatrix, can't really go wrong tonically speaking as it is just a synth with a sequencer that plays mostly pentatonic scales. The bass synthesizer already has some sequences built into it so users can make use of the bass synth immediately. AudioTool can be used without cost but uploading your recorded creations into the Hobnox website requires getting a free membership.
All in all, AudioTool provides a basic method of creating digital music through a browser-based environment. Others may find AudioTool to become a sketchbook of sorts for musical ideas and inspiration.
