Yamaha has certainly unleashed its very own monster in the form of the technology behind Vocaloid. This virtual singer technology is just one of those things that musicians cherish of feel threatened by. Either way, it's really nice to have a singer who does all that vocal work for you, can sing all the notes you throw at it, never eats, never asks for money, and never has that prima donna attitude you so hate. The latest virtual singer comes in the form of PowerFX Big Al.
Big Al is another creature that emerged out of Yamaha's Vocaloid technology. Just like all Vocaloid singers, Big Al will sing any typed in lyrics in accordance to a melody of the user's choosing. Included tools and effects can improve or manipulate the results. Big Al is even capable of becoming your own choir as he can sing 16 voices simultaneously.
Big Al's voice has been derived from a male singer who was recorded extensively. As with all Vocaloid singers, Big Al comes packaged with Vocaloid software which can be used to input and edit lyrics, apply melody from MIDI, add expressive effects like vibrato, and apply dynamics.
The PowerFX Big Al package includes a standalone version with an export to WAV function, VSTi plugin, and ReWire connectivity. It is now available as a download that costs 149.00 USD and as a DVD package for 179.00 USD.
