    McDSP Retro Recorder
HandHeld Music The audio plugin company McDSP has turned its attention to iPhone apps with Retro Recorder, which -- at least according to the style of its interface -- takes recording back to simpler times, when cassette was king and Portastudios ruled all.

Of course, they didn't have iPhones back in those days. Early cell phones are about the size as some hard-disk workstations, so showing up back in the day with some kind of tiny, magic with a finger controlled screen would have people thinking you were some kind of alien or witch. Of course, going retro with a MIDI creation suite for Commodore 64 wouldn't much fly today.

Electro-Harmonix POG2 Generates Polyphonic Octaves, Too
Experimental So you want to generate synthetic organs, but you're adamantly against stem-cell research? Try the Electro-Harmonix POG2. It's like the classic Polyphonic Octave Generator of yore with some kickin' new features that make me glad I didn't just buy an original POG because the price will probably go down in lieu of this sweet, new version.

    Thanks, recession!

Fender Sonic Jazz Master Jazz Blaster
Noise Noise diggers rejoice. Not only is Sonic Youth in the throes of a brand new album release with the critically acclaimed "The Eternal," the notoriously experimental Jazzmaster players just got outfitted with a brand new set of notoriously experimental Jazzmasters, modded to their twisted specs, so you can take advantage without putting your guitar under the knife.

Meanwhile, Dinosaur Jr. releases a new album as well, but J. Mascis already has his own signature Jazzmaster. What a year for noise rockers!

    Big Ups To Gordon Brown
Law & Legal Issues The Right Honourable Gordon Brown -- Prime Minister of the UK -- and his administration have just factored a 1.1 billion Euro Future Jobs Fund into the budget. Part of this initiative leads to the creation of 5,000 jobs in the culture, music and creative industries, which could translate into 1,250 new Coldplays, 1,000 new Oasis' or some amalgamation of both.

Barring that, the initiative serves to create jobs and opportunities to get into jobs for those who normally would have no way to get their foot in the door otherwise. We can't all be Susan Boyle.

    Overloud Breverb AudioMIDI Edition
Electronic Music I've always thought that Overloud BREVERB was a pretty great sounding reverb as far as plugins go, but with so much freeware floating out there and a firm anti-pirating upbringing -- combined with generally slim wallet -- it's hard to justify paying for a plugin no matter how good it sounds.

Perhaps taking note of the economic climate, Overloud has just announced BREVERB AudioMIDI edition. While the full edition still will put you down about three bills, the AudioMIDI edition gives you some decent bang for your five bucks -- if you order straight from Overloud's website, that's all it costs.

    Brendan O'Brien At It Again
Noise Last week, we had nothing but great things to say about Mastodon's Crack The Skye, a metal masterpiece produced by Brendan O'Brien that takes the prog metal Georgians to places beyond psychedelic.

O'Brien is also known for his work on every Pearl Jam album -- except the seminal epic Ten. That is, until now.

Eventide PitchFactor -- 15 Minute Demo
Improvisational Music The good folks at Gearwire.com gifted us today with a very long look at a pedal many guitar buffs have been salivating over since it was announced. The Eventide Pitchfactor takes the quality of the Timefactor delay and Modfactor modulation units and applies it to pitch.

The pedal has several settings that sound incredible -- not just altering pitch and intelligently harmonizing, but also throwing in some sparkly delay effects that make it easier than ever to do the whole one man band thing. Watch the video after the bump.

Pay To Play -- The Price Of Royalties
Law & Legal Issues An article in the New York Times concentrates on how music played in Australian Night Clubs generates royalties for record labels and performers. In the U.S., this practice is not enforced, but as record companies continue to see losses in music sales, secondary sources of income -- like royalties -- may come into play more strongly if record companies have their ways.

But what does this mean for the club-going Aussie?

    Denon DN-X1700 vs. DJ Hero
Electronic Music With the massive success of band based video games taking over the markets, it's not a surprise to see that DJ Hero is the next step in the Hero franchise. While these games can have some positive effects (introducing kids to music, training guitarists to separate hands and feet while drumming), it's nowhere near the real experience.

Luckily, Denon DJ throws the first punch with their latest mixer, the DN-X1700!

On-Stage RS7500 Sturdy Tilt Back Amp Stand
Tools and Hardware With the release of a new tiltback amplifier stand, most journalists aren't elbowing for position to get coverage, but the release does bring up a good point, and it's one that might help keep the decibels down at  practice.

A vast majority of guitarists I've seen and played with simply sit their amps on solid ground. Of these guitarists, none of them have ears on their knees. If you're one of the few guitarists with this rare hideous mutation / advantagoues evolution, feel free not to read on.
